Achimota Plays Host to King's College, Nigeria Print E-mail
Cricket MatchAchimota School played host to King's College of Nigeria in a four day exchange programme from Thursday, 29th May 2008 to Sunday, 1st June 2008.

Activities lined up for the programme were hockey, cricket and soccer, with a dinner to round the competition off. The games were played at Achimota School's main playing fields. The competition started with hockey on Friday, 30th May 2008 at the hockey pitch.

Achimota School won the match by three goals to one. Goal scorers were:

Emmanuel Jerry Ageke   (Cadbury House)
Samuel Bimpong             (Aggrey House)
Eugene Sackey              (Lugard House)

The Cricket match was played over Friday 30th May and Saturday, 31st May 2008 at the cricket oval. Achimota was beaten by Kings College who scored 116 runs for nine wickets against Achimota's 89 runs all out. Achimota's bowlers were led by Charles Des Bordes who took three wickets. Bernard Thabo and Michael Tetteh weighed in with two wickets each whilst Salim Seidu and Andrew Amankwah took one each. The match was marked by a lot of untidy bowling on both sides, with an extraordinary number of wides recorded.

The soccer competition did not take place because Kings College were unable to field a team.

Trophies were donated by Akora Vanderpuye Orgle, a keen cricketer and the current Chairman of the Ghana Cricket Association. The trophies were presented to the winners by His Excellency the Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, who was present at both competitions with a large entourage of High Commission staff and old students of King's College.

The School hosted a dinner in honour of their colleagues from Nigeria and the Achimota School teams on the evening of the Saturday at which the students, in particular, had a nice time.

The games were keenly contested and provided a very lively atmosphere for the students who hadn't experienced a programme of this nature before.

The last full Achimota School - King's College games were held in the 1970/71 academic year, some 37 years ago.
