House 17, the seventeenth boading house to be created at Achimota School, was started in the seventies to cater for the increasing student population of girls who were attending Achimota Secondary School at the time. It had, for over thirty years, been known simply by its number, House 17. This set it apart from all the other boarding houses on the compound which have been named after men, women or even organisations of some distinction. All this changed in October 2008 when House 17 was given a new name. After requests from the House Staff, students and past students, the
School Board deliberated over names submitted by the OAA, and finally
chose to name House 17 after Akora Justice Annie Baeta-Jiagge. House 17
is therefore now known as Annie Baeta-Jiagge House. The new name was conferred on the House at a short ceremony on 11th October 2008 at the Western Assembly Hall. The Baeta family graciously lead-sponsored the 1st phase of the renovation of the house in recognition of the honour done the first lady Judge of Ghana.
Refreshments were served after the naming ceremony and a tour of the house.

Written by The OAA 1959 Year Group
|
|
In 2005 when we celebrated our 50th year of entering Achimota School the Headmistress of the School notified the OAA 1959 Year Group that we would be hosting the 2009 Founders Day Programme. Our responsibility was to comprise planning the celebratory activities and implementing a selected physical renova tion or development project.
The Year Group selected to build two Basketball Courts on the lawn in front of Kingsley House to International Standard. The project was seen as an expression of appreciation from the Year Group to the school, and the plaque on the court lists the names of the Year Group members. In commencing the project the late Akora Henry Dei became its moving force and it was unfortunate that he did not live to witness its completion and commissioning.

The General Meeting of the OAA, called to elect a new Executive for the current term, took place at the SSNIT Guest House at The Ridge in Accra on Friday 17th April 2009.
The meeting started shortly after 7:00 pm with a short opening prayer. The President declared the meeting open with a reminder that the gathering was a continuation of the AGM held in November 2008. In response to a question on the numbers that constituted a quorum, the relevant part of the OAA's Constitution was read out, stating that 50 members were required to constitute a quorum for an AGM. The number in attendance at the evening's meeting was stated as being 26 members.
The President declared the purpose of the meeting to be the Election of a new Executive of the OAA and called for nominations for an "Electoral Commissioner". During the process, a query was raised from the floor as to the legitimacy of the whole process, given that the numbers in attendance were less than those at the original AGM where the Elections were postponed due to insufficient numbers.

As you are aware, the OAA's AGM held on 30th November 2008 decided that the elections for a new Executive Committee be held on Founders' Day, ie 14th March 2009. This did not happen, as a message was received from the Chair of the Achimota School Board that the OAA could not hold a meeting on the School compound on the same day that the School was holding its Founders' Day. An Emergency OAA Executive Committee meeting was therefore held on Wednesday 25th March 2009, to decide on an appropriate date and place for the election of officers. It was finally unanimously agreed that an Extraordinary Meeting of the OAA be called specifically for the elections of a new Executive Committee of the OAA, and that this meeting be held at the SSNIT Guest House, Ringway Estates, Accra, on Friday 17th April 2009 at 6.30pm. Nominations should kindly be sent to
